On May 22, 2010, the first purchase was made using Bitcoin.

Laszlo Hanyecz purchased two pizzas for a grand total of 10,000 bitcoin. (In today's money that's somewhere around $95 MILLION — but that's not really the point.) This exchange helped legitimize Bitcoin as a real-world currency. Today, the process is a whole lot easier — and much cheaper — with the help of the Lightning Network.

Step 1: Get some Bitcoin

Let's buy some Bitcoin! Let's buy some Bitcoin! We recommend Cash App because it’s simple and easy to use. Once you download the app, you'll be asked to provide some personal and payment information before you can buy bitcoin. Once you’re approved, purchase a small amount to get started (<$50). Congratulations, you now have some bitcoin!

Step 2: Transfer your funds

The next step is to transfer your new bitcoin to an external wallet, like Bluewallet. Once you’ve downloaded Bluewallet, create a new Bitcoin wallet, open it up and tap "Receive." Copy the long string of numbers, which acts as your address so people know where to send your bitcoin. Now, hop back into Cash App, select the "Withdraw" option, and paste the Bitcoin address. That's it! Now we have to wait for the transaction to be confirmed on the blockchain, which should take around 10 minutes.

Step 3: Set up your Lightning wallet

While you're waiting, create a new Lightning wallet within Bluewallet. This wallet will allow you to make instant and cheap transactions over the Lightning Network. Lightning transactions make using Bitcoin for everyday payments simple and easy. The next step is to open your Lightning wallet and tap “Manage Funds,” and from there tap "Refill" to fund your Lightning wallet with bitcoin. Keep in mind: your Lightning wallet is intended for use for payments, not for storing your Bitcoin. Only store small amounts of bitcoin at a time in your lightning wallet.

Step 4: Buy some Pizza!

Hungry yet? Now comes the fun part! Tap the button below to order carryout or delivery from any Dominos location in the US. Choose your order from the menu, and at the end you'll be presented with a QR code that you can scan with your Lightning wallet within Bluewallet to pay for the invoice, and experience the magic of Lightning! Bon appétit!
